car in forest yellow autum leaves

A lot of Vancouver driving culture treats the horn like a crime. People would rather sneak up, squeeze past, or sit in danger than make a short sound. I do not buy that. This is a 2000 kg machine with limited visibility and a lot of people who are lost, looking at phones, or about to step out – need a polite toot communication. It is not rage. It is “I am here.”

When the thought of using the horn makes your chest heat up, that is information. Maybe you were taught that noise is rude. Maybe you freeze instead of speaking up. We take that piece apart like any other skill. You lead. I follow. Calm driving includes being able to talk to the road when talking keeps people alive.
